Mitsubishi has built car parts out of materials extracted from plants – well, maybe car ‘accessories’ is a better description. The idea turns your average green machine (i.e.: Mitsubishi i EV plug-in car) into the most environmentally friendly automobile on the planet.

Or at least it will, one day. For now, drivers will have to settle on plant-based floor mats and seat belts. Add to that recycled seat covers (made from discarded Lee jeans), and you’ve got a car that Captain Planet would be jealous of!

Bet you didn’t expect a Capt. Planet reference today, did ya?

Fibers for the Mitsubishi rubber are constructed from plant based resin: aka – sugarcane molasses, then wrapped in regular petroleum-based polypropylene sheaths, which allows it to meet performance demanded: temperature, regular beatings from people, etc.

“Mitsubishi Motors…has developed a new floor mat made using plant-based bio-polyethylene (bio-PE) fiber to add to its lineup of proprietary plant-based “Green Plastic” products. The company plans to start production of the new floor mats in the summer of 2012,” according to the auto maker’s official statement.

According to World Car Fans: This design study uses the main stylistic cues of Mitsubishi’s new ‘jet-fighter’ design language, as the former EA model helped inspire that current paradigm, and which Farkas also employed on his Mitsubishi Concept CS recently.

At the front are also some design elements borrowed from the Mitsubishi Concept RA which debuted in at the Detroit auto show in 2008 but the rest of the body has unique waving horizontal lines that Farkas also used in the CS Concept.

Farkas also gives us a full on interior rendering too with premium materials and four individual seats used to deck out the cabin. The dashboard styling looks realistic enough as well, as if it were a properly finished concept vehicle.

Mitsubishi has teased and taunted us with computer generated photos of the RVR Compact Crossover. Now, a real life production model has been unveiled. We initially released pictures of the RVR Crossover Concept last month – and have patiently awaiting the official unveiling of Mitsu’s next generation of crossover vehicle. Now the 1.8 liter MIVEC engined RVR is out and looking classy in …what is that, sea-foam?

Mitsubishi’s concept contained the clean-diesel burning engine and a 4WD option. No word yet if a production model will have similar options, but we do know RVR is slated to be released below the Outlander. Nice to see those R&D renderings were factual. Stay tuned for more on the RVR Crossover, and read details in Mitsu’s press release below.

PRESS RELEASE – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has decided to name its all-new compact crossover the RVR. This all-new compact crossover is planned for sequential release globally, and will be first released in Japan next spring.

The all-new RVR is a compact crossover that provides high environmental efficiency and has a compact body while providing ample utility space and high performance.

The RVR will be fitted with an all-new 1.8L MIVEC petrol engine, and will be approximately 4.3 meters in length, featuring high fuel efficiency via its lightweight compact body. With the RVR, MMC expands its crossover lineup, which already includes the full-size Pajero, and the mid-size Outlander.

This new compact crossover will be released globally, including North America, Europe, and Asian regions including China.

Well, it’s not a live photo – but carscoop.com dug up some computer generated illustrations of what the new Mitsubishi Compact Crossover may look like. And regardless of how real these animations are, we are slightly interested – ok we are really really really interested! In fact, the new Crossover may not be available until 2011 for sale, but with all the sketches and drawing popping up online we’ll know what it looks like way ahead of time. Mitsu R&D really needs to worry about their development security. These front & rear composites are bit as exciting as Mitsu’s initial drawing, but it does give a more realistic look at the Concept, and also reveals an interesting glimpse as to how car production is handled these days.

Riding on Mitsubishi’s mid-size global platform (which also underpins the Lancer and Outlander), the compact crossover will be powered by a variety of four-cylinder engines including a new 1.8-liter turbo-diesel with 136 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque.

Both the Peugeot iOn EV and Mitsu’s iMiEV are headed to the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show – yet they look oddly similar. Both small alt-fuel 5-door sedans are scheduled to come out in late 2010. Body styles are pretty identical, in fact some might think these vehicles were separated at birth! That is because the iOn EV is basically a re-branded Mitsubishi.

Both vehicles boast an 81 mile range with the help of lithium-ion batteries. 81 miles not grand enough for you? If this helps, both vehicles’ batteries can be recharged 80% within thirty minutes, thanks to a rapid charger. No rapid charge on hand? Expect to wait six hours for the batteries to be full again. i-MiEV/iOn’s electric motor produces 64 horse power and 180 Nm of torque. Peugeot stated the iOn has a top speed of 81 mph, which is good because we all know what happens when your Peugeot reaches 88.

Look for more of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Peugeot iOn EV and more at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show Sept 17th.

Just in case you didn’t feel the Mitsubishi Triton was powerful enough – an Australian Rally-Tuner is taking the pickup and turning it into a desert prowler. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart has put together a high tech version of their Triton SUV/Pickup – with a powerful 3.2 liter turbo charged engine and the right stuff (as in shocks, struts and horsepower) to barrel through the dunes of any Outback setting.

Triton Rally’s power plant churns out 332 feet of torque after a 177 hp boost at a moderate 3000 to 4000 RPM. Unfortunately, the vehicle is currently only a concept, unveiled at the Australian International Auto Show. We hope to see a production model too, if only for the race course. But honestly, who would want to have just one Mitsu Triton like this, when a few thousand could be produced for the buying public.
