“For the second consecutive year, the Dakar is welcomed in South America for a challenge of 9000 kilometres leading the riders and crews on the roads, the tracks, the mountains and the deserts of Argentina and Chile. From the 1st to the 17th of January, the competitors will fight it out on 14 stages: the loop to cover, anti-clockwise, will include a thorough visit of the Atacama Desert and its gigantic dunes. The white sand close to Fiambala or the grey one in the area of Nihuil will complete the spread of colours and the variety of difficulties all along the event.”

With that we present the Mitsubishi Ralliart Edition. What, Mitsubishi is running in Dakar again? Well, umm…no. Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota and Nissan are all running the intense Rally Competition this year. But no Mitsubishi racing.

The Mitsubishi Colt has been a favorite of Economy-class drivers for over three decades, but it isn’t the prettiest ride in Mitsu’s line up. The current Mitsubishi Colt is a actually constructed in the Netherlands, using the same underpinnings as its sister car, the discontinued Smart Forfour. Mitsubishi has used the name twice previously, first as the marque of a series of kei cars and subcompact cars in the 1960s, and then as the export version of the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback in the 1980s and 1990s. The Chrysler Corporation, Mitsubishi’s longtime partner, also used the name in the 1970 when it rebadged the second generation Mitsubishi Galant as Dodge Colt and Plymouth Colt captive imports for the United States market.

[nggallery id=1]

In 2006 Mitsubishi displayed the Colt MIEV, using a separate electric motor at each wheel. Development of their MIEV technology was first announced May ’06 when Mitsubishi unveiled the Colt version is a rear-wheel drive all-electric vehicle fitted Colt MIEV test-bed. With two 20 kW in-wheel motors. The Colt MIEV has a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) and a cruising range of 150 km (93 miles) on a single charge. Charge times have been suggested to be a quick as 10 minutes, although whether this is partial or full is undisclosed. It does however point to the usage of quick-charge batteries such as those developed by Toshiba.

Mitsubishi used the Colt test bed to perform on-road testing to identify and resolve any problems unique to the in-wheel motor vehicle, including any deterioration in road holding and ride comfort due to increases in unsprung weight, as well as reliability and durability issues in the in-wheel motor system and its peripheral components (suspension, wheels, tires). They simultaneously worked on developing a more powerful version of the in wheel motors for 4WD applications.

After well over a year of speculation, concept drawings and successful real-world testing the Misubishi I-MiEV is ready for production. With 1400 currently ready for early buyers, more are expected to hit the streets of Japan later this summer. So, what are our first thoughts on this new Electric car from Mitsu?

First off, we have to say it’s great that Mitsubishi stuck with the i-MiEV’s concept design (for the most part) – it takes the futuristic style of Mitsu and other Japanese brands and mixes in the compact/fun nature of a European car. In fact, it almost looks like Fiat and Mitsu had a baby, then decided to make it electric!

We also dig recharge time: I-MiEV is powered by a a lithium-ion battery, which is mounted in the center of the car, under the floor. Range is somewhere around 100 miles per charge (MPC?) when driven under normal conditions. The battery can be recharged to 80% capacity using standard outlets in 30 minutes. The i-MiEV goes from empty to fully-charged in 7 to 14 hours. The regenerative braks also help.

It would be nice to have more solid numbers to back up this car. Mitsubishi claims the car gives “maximum fun” “maximum economy” and “maximum regenerative” yet doesn’t share any hard digits when it comes to top speed, 0-60 time, etc. Although the electric motor is rated at 47kW, with 180 Nm of torque.

Currently the tiny car has a price $47,544 USD. It is certainly not the most inexpensive automobile on the highway. But with gas already heading back up to $3 a gallon in the States (in only the first week of June) it may only be a matter of time until people start weighing tag cost over long term price of fuel. One thing is certain, if Mitsubishi wants to market the i-MiEV to North America, they’re going to need a reduction in cost.

We see many Mitsubishi Galants out on the road today, and to most they seem like a relatively new vehicle. But the Galant has been around since 1969, sometimes two door, sometimes four, and sometimes with a Chrysler logo slapped on it. However, the Galant has had enough staying power to make its way down the line of automotive history for over 40 years – that’s saying something!

First Generation (circa) 1970 Mitsubishi Galant

“Galant” is derived from the French word meaning “chivalrous” – as if the ride in a Galant is an honor for those to cherish. Since its inception the vehicle has transformed from a two door boxy coupe to a four door sports sedan. Total sales over the decades have even surpassed 5 million. Early Galants were constructed in Japan, but by 1971 were exported to American soil by Chrysler – where it was renamed Dodge Colt. A more powerful GTO variant also arouse in the 1970′s.

1977 Mitsubishi Galant

Chrysler kept exporting the Galant throughout the 70′s – adding a station wagon version to match the larger, successful version coming out of Japan. During this time Mitsubishi introduced their MCA Jet engine. This incorporated a “Jet Valve” in each Galant, a secondary intake valve which improved emissions. The 1980′s saw a more angular design model coming from Mitsu, a supercharged engine, and rebranded models becoming highly popular in both the United Kingdom and Australia. In 1985 Galant was awarded Germany’s Das Goldene Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) as Car of the Year.

1987 Galant

Ending the 1980′s came with Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year Award in 1989. Into the 1990′s as Mitsubishi again takes home awards from Germany, the United States and their home base of Japan. The Galant is finally branded the same name throughout United States car lots, as well as being rebranded as a Dodge/Eagle 2000 in Canada. 1993 also brought in a North American based assembly plant in Normal, Illinois.

Seventhed Generation – 1998 Mitsubishi Galant

At the dawn of the 21st century, Mitsubishi introduced an entirely new Galant style, curvy, sporty and room for five. Some variations of the newer Galants included rally inspired four wheel drive and supercharged V6 engine, available in both manual and automatic transmission. ES, LS and GTZ models were also offered up with a 3.0 liter 195 horsepower V6.

2009′s Galant

Today, a slightly larger yet just as sporty Galant is available at a Mitsubishi dealer near you. Most models will come with a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine or the powerful 3.0 liter V6. More curves and a daring grille have added more texture to this Japanese inspired vehicle both outside and under the hood.

The XLS was dropped, only to be replaced by SE trim, reoffering its previous year’s 4.7-liter V8 engine for it. Aside from the SE, all other trim levels are powered by a 3.7-liter, 210-horsepower V6 engine.Similar to the Dodge Dakota, the most distinctive difference between the two trucks is that the Raider has a significantly longer warranty. Mitsubishi offers a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, while the Dakota offers the three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty.

Standard equipment for the LS Extended Cab includes air conditioning, power outlets, variable intermittent wipers, and front and rear cup-holders. Optional for all models is Sirius Satellite Radio and a premium sound system with MP3 capability. Controls for the Mitsubishi Raider are easy-to-reach and makes the truck feel more car-like than you’d expect.

Side curtain airbags were eliminated for this model year. A Safety Package included four-wheel antilock brakes for select models.

With little wind and road noise, the 2007 Mitsubishi Raider remains peaceful. Handling works well either on- or off-road, picking up ruts and hitting bumps with effortlessly.

The full redesign from last year’s model year leaves little room for change in the 2008 model year.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander is available in three trim levels: ES, LS and XLS. The ES comes with 16-inch steel wheels, cruise control, trip computer, full power accessories and air conditioning. The LS upgrades to alloy wheels, keyless ignition, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a cargo cover. Being equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels and Bluetooth capability the XLS increases seating capacity to seven by including the additional third row seat.

Each Outlander model has either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive capability is more flexible than other SUVs in its class. You save fuel when you switch the dial to “2WD” for the power to go to the front wheels only.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander includes all of the major safety features. Antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat and full-length airbags and whiplash-reducing front head restraints are all standard.

Comfortable and receptive on the road, the Outlander is a better drive than expected. The sporty reflexes are perfect around corners and the brakes are immediate.

“A Better Car for Everyday Driving” is how Mitsubishi defines the 2008 Lancer Evolution. In its 10th generation, the Lancer is equipped with a 2.0-liter I-4 engine, at 291-horsepower. Plenty of safety features, sporty seats and performance potential make for a great car in its running for the 2008 model year.Available in two trim levels: The Evolution GSR and Evolution MR both are equipped with standard all wheel drive and either a manual or automated-manual transmission. Some improvements under the hood include an aluminum engine block and intake and exhaust valve timing, compared to an iron engine and intake-only timing.

Looking more aggressive than the Lancer, its crook-like nose was inspired by fighter jets. A rear spoiler is standard with 18-inch wheels that frame four-piston Brembo front breaks. The hood, bumpers, roof and fenders are all made of aluminum.

The only major interior difference between the regular Lancer and this Lancer revolution are the Recaro racing seats that have leather/fabric upholstery. Cruise control, power windows and locks, automatic climate control and a six-speaker CD stereo come standard with the 2008 Lancer Revolution. The MR has a few options that include a navigation system, keyless access and a 650-watt Rockford Fosgate stereo.

Seven standard airbags come with the Evolution. Four-wheel-disk antilock brakes and electronic stability system are also included.

Distinctly more attractive than its predecessor, the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer gets a big makeover after sitting out for the 2007 model year. The sportier, more tech-savvy look for the Lancer appeals more certainly than other cars in its class. Mitsubishi offers this sedan in three trim levels, DE, ES and GTS.

Each trim level features unique seat fabric and trim pieces for the interior. Its clean, straightforward design isn’t as sleek as the exterior, but the up-scale quality is comfortable enough for easy use. The five-seat Mitsubishi sedan has a CD stereo and an optional Navigation and Technology Package for the GTS model.

Each model is equipped with a 2.0-liter I-4 engine, with either 143-hp or 152-hp. It is estimated 21/22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway for the five-speed manual and CVT.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer has front-seat side airbags, a driver’s knee airbag and full-length head curtain airbags. Antilock brakes come standard on ES and GTS models, but are optional on the DE.

Significantly heavier than its predecessor, the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer allows the driver more confidence whilst on the road. Not feeling particularly quick, excellent grip should be pleasing enough for buyers.

The Mitsubishi Galant presents some notable features for the 2008 model year. This normally more conservatively-designed class helps the 2008 Galant stand out for family sedans. Available in only in limited trim levels, the Mitsubishi Galant simplifies by spreading out equipment.Dropping the GTS trim level, the three available ones are DE, ES and Ralliart. DE models include customary features; 16-inch steel wheels, plastic mirrors and door handles. ES models, the next step up, add cruise control, six-speaker MP3 compatible playback and an optional Sport Package. The Ralliart, performance-oriented, trim features 18-inch wheels, exterior styling enhancements, aluminum pedals, an eight-way power driver seat and heated front seats.

The DE and ES trim levels are both equipped with the four-cylinder engines, while the Ralliart comes with a high-output V6 engine. The 2.4-liter I-4 engine is either outfitted with up to 155-hp or 160-hp. The 3.8-liter V-6 engine goes up to 258-hp.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Galant has a contemporary interior cabin. Blue black-lighting, white-face gauges and a cascading center console are just a few special features. Roomy and comfortable, the Galant is ideal for families who want space with a softer cushion.

Each trim level comes with front-seat side airbags and full-length side-curtain airbags. Only the ES and Ralliart come with antilock brakes. The Ralliart models additionally come with traction control.
